Educational backpack walks

Educational backpack walks have been laid out in De Alde Feanen for all ages. Children are given a backpack with study material, after which they carry out various hands-on tasks involving the peat bog and the animals that live there, under the guidance of a parent or teacher. The educational backpack walks are available from April to October. Click here for the range of educational backpack walks.

Dissect owl pellets

Owls cannot digest the hair and bones of their prey, so they make pellets from them which they regurgitate. Such a pellet shows what an owl has eaten. A magnifying glass, brush and chop sticks are used to dissect the contents of a pellet, looking for the jaws and skulls of mice. We put this ‘skeleton’ on a pellet certificate, which can be taken home. The guide from It Fryske Gea gives a fascinating presentation about birds of prey and owls, and supervises the dissection of pellets.

  • Cost: € 3 per pupil
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Class: Primary school (ages 6 to 11)

Useful to know: our guides also visit schools to dissect owl pellets!

Bee demonstration with the beekeeper
