Overzicht twintig nationale parken

What is the LIFE+ project about?

In the heart of Frisia lies National Park De Alde Feanen, most of which is now designated as an important European Natura 2000 area. With over 5.288 acres, this area is one of the largest fenland areas of Western Europe. The area has a varied landscape with a lot of water, reed beds and wetland woods. There is a great diversity of plants and animals. A large part of the water is navigable. Due to its natural values, this part is popular with recreationists.

Threats to nature

The biodiversity of De Alde Feanen, however, cannot be taken for granted. There are several factors that threaten the nature reserve:

  • Strong decline in water reed beds, caused by the disappearance of water level dynamics.
  • Strong decline in submerged water plants, caused by the phosphate legacy from the past.
  • Decline of floating fens, caused by ongoing ageing and scrub encroachment.
  • Decline of fen meadows, caused by ongoing acidification.
  • Water quality has improved in recent years, but has not yet reached the desired level.

Restore and protect

The LIFE+ project ‘Booming Business' focuses on enhancing the natural values. LIFE+ is a European funding program for rehabilitation and development of special natural values in Natura 2000 areas. The project consists of six measures to restore and protect the fenland area of De Alde Feanen. These measures should result in clear water and new water plants, new reed beds for the bittern and better conditions for the highly endangered floating fens and fen meadows. This will also improve the recreational value of the area.

Goals LIFE+

  • Restoring natural values in De Alde Feanen.
  • Improving water quality in De Alde Feanen.
  • Improving the navigability of De Alde Feanen.
